Chapter 118 - Lower Your Voice
Shangguan Ning took it instantly and observed it carefully. She let out a sigh of relief after she was sure that it was her mother’s diamond ring.
Jing Yichen had noticed this diamond ring when the nurse was connecting the IV to Ning’s forearm, a couple of days ago.
He wasn’t sure where this diamond ring was from or what was its significance, so he simply put it away for her, carefully. He knew that this couldn’t have been a diamond ring that Jing Yiran gave to her, because Jing Yiran’s personality was such that he preferred all things that were over the top. He wouldn’t have given her something so old. He would have preferred gifting her brand new, shiny solitaire instead.
Shangguan Ning explained a moment later, “This is my mother’s wedding ring. She never took it off her finger, till she was alive. After she passed away, this ring and her necklace disappeared. I feel lucky to get two of her most treasured belongings. Something tells me that the truth of her death, won’t elude me for too long now.”
Jing Yichen felt a bit guilty hearing her say this.
He had promised to find out the truth about her mother’s death, but after a lot of diligent research, he hadn’t unearthed any effective clue. It would not have been difficult for a man of his stature to find out the truth about something but all related clues and evidences had been meticulously erased or had mysteriously gone missing. Without these, it was close to impossible, to find out something conclusive.
He was silent for a moment and then asked suddenly, “Ning, Jing Yiran gave you this ring?”
Shangguan Ning nodded and said, “Yes, he gave it to me. But I think it is quite strange – how could he have my mother’s belongings? He only met me a few months ago. I have been stuck in this rut for so many years, yet I haven’t been able to find a single clue. He has hardly invested any time in finding out the truth but he has accomplished so much more.”
Jing Yichen hated Jing Yiran from his very core, because Jing Yiran’s follies had almost cost Shangguan Ning her life. Jing Yichen wanted to tear him apart. He wished he could have one of his own men beat up Jing Yiran to pulp. That way Jing Yiran would be home found for months. Maybe then he would learn a lesson that he could never forget. That was why his hatred was partially gone at the moment and that was why he was able to perform this analysis with rationality and calmness.
Jing Yichen grew up with Jing Yiran. Although their relationship was strained, both the brothers knew each other really well.
Jing Yiran was not as incapable or careless as he pretended to be. Being a Casanova and a womaniser was just a façade. He was an extremely powerful man. If Doctor Mu Qing hadn’t been with Jing Yichen the other day, they would have been unable to break into the bar. It was such a secure hideout. Jing Yichen was aware of his brother’s capabilities.
But Jing Yichen was absolutely confident that Jing Yiran was still far less capable than he was.
Since he wasn’t as capable as him yet he was still able to find out what he couldn’t find, it basically meant that he had controlled one or several insiders related to that affair years back.
It seemed that he would need more people to supervise Jing Yiran to a deeper degree.
Shangguan Ning was out of coma but her condition was still very fragile. Mu Qing had come in to check on her and he confirmed that she needed more rest, in order to be able to recuperate fully.
After Mu Qing’s departure, Jing Yichen fed Shangguan Ning some porridge and let her get some more sleep.
After she fell asleep, he made a call to Zheng Jing, the Commissioner of the Police for the criminal division.
Zheng Jing answered the call immediately and said, “Master Jing, How may I help you?”
Jing Yichen spoke in a low voice. “Someone is asleep here. I am going to speak very softly, so that she doesn’t get disturbed. Listen carefully.”
Jing Yichen would rather make this call from the same room that Shangguan Ning was sleeping in and risk disturbing her, than make this call from outside and leave her alone again. It was too dangerous and Jing Yichen did not want to repeat his mistake.
Zheng Jing was speechless. This didn’t sound right. Who was it whom Jing Yichen was so concerned about?
This concern was very much like the concern one has for someone they love deeply.
Zheng Jing had never seen this side to Master Jing.
He said, in jest, “Master Jing, this doesn’t sound like you at all. Is your wife asleep in the same room ?”
Zheng Jing laughed at his own joke. Everyone knew that Jing Yichen was a workaholic and did not waste his time on women. Ten years ago, he was involved with one woman, namely Tang Yun. After she disappeared, Jing Yichen had caused mayhem in the entire city. Anyhow, that was such a long time ago.
“Yes, my wife is asleep. She is a light sleeper, so I can’t speak any louder at the moment.”
Zheng Jing couldn’t believe his ears. Was it really Jing Yichen who was so concerned about somebody else’s well being that he took the effort to speak softly over the phone?
“From now on, tap every phone call Jing Yiran makes and receives, including calls made by his close aides. Send me a detailed report on this, every alternate day.”
Zheng Jing didn’t hear a word of what Jing Yichen had just said. He thought this was a joke. Jing Yichen and married? That didn’t add up. He couldn’t help but ask, “Master Jing, are you married?!”
Jing Yichen was surprised at the Commissioner’s cheek to ask him this question. He still chose to reply politely, “Yes.”
Zheng Jing suddenly realized his folly. He was asking prying questions about Jing Yichen’s personal life. It was not his place to do so. He immediately apologised for his misconduct and got back to the task at hand. “Master Jing, whose calls do you want me to tap?”
“Jing Yiran and his aides.”
“Alright. Just reconfirming. You want me to tap all calls made and received by Second Master Jing, am I right?”
Zheng Jing almost believed that he had got it wrong again. Although it was common knowledge that Jing Yichen and Jing Yiran never got along too well with each other, yet tapping phone calls was taking it to a whole new level. Besides, Jing Yiran was someone who shouldn’t be messed with. He was capable of making things worse, if offended.
Besides, Zheng Jing was aware that he himself was not the final authority on everything, in the police department. He also had people that he was answerable to, for his actions.
If he didn’t back his demands with the requisite approvals, he would not be given enough resources in terms of capital or manpower.
Tapping Second Master Jing’s phone was no joke. This task involved a lot of risk. Jing Yiran was the second son of Jing Zhongxiu. It didn’t matter that the order to do this had come from none other than Jing Zhongxiu’s older son, Jing Yichen. It was still very dangerous!
Zheng Jing was aware that it didn’t matter how many accolades he and his team had won in the past. Now it was Jing Yiran who was on target. He was the heartthrob of the nation. Going after him would mean sending out an open invitation for public ridicule, especially from the women.
